Often, fly anglers will refuse to fish in places where they cannot adequately employ the traditional back cast. Why not learn how to spey cast?

Spey casting is a specialized fly casting art form that probably first developed on the River Spey in Scotland. This style of fly casting solves problems and helps fly anglers overcome challenges such as casting to trout and salmon on rivers where a back cast is impractical. It is also used often by saltwater surf anglers when long distance casts are desirable using heavy and large flies. Knowing the basics of spey casting can help when casting heavy or bulky flies or when a stiff breeze is blowing as well.

When spey casting, perfecting the roll cast and the D-loop are essential. When executed correctly, spey casting is a beautiful form of fly casting art in motion and many will stop to watch an experienced caster as he or she casts their flies considerable distances using what appears to be a minimum amount of energy.

Although it is possible to implement some spey casting techniques on a standard fly rod, doing so can be more difficult than when using a rod that is specifically designed for casting in the spey style. This form of casting generally requires two hands with a rod handle that can accommodate both hands. A right handed caster will use their left hand on the bottom portion of the fly rod grip below the reel seat in order to help control the rod and have extra leverage when casting the line and fly forward.

Generally, specialty fly lines including "shooting heads" are employed by fly casters which are balanced to the spey fly rod. At first, using this equipment can be daunting to the beginner, but a good instructor should have the novice casting quite well by teaching the correct techniques for the roll cast and D-loop.

Today, there are many fly fishing rods that are made especially for spey casting under a variety of situations. A fairly recent innovation is the "switch rod" which may be described as a hybrid between a traditional standard fly rod and a double handed spey. Switch rods can usually be cast comfortably with either the more popular single hand cast or with two hands.

Learning to cast spey style has other advantages as well - if you can become a competent spey caster, you will also drastically improve your traditional fly casting skills and abilities as well.

Why not learn more about the sport of fly fishing? Although many believe that fly fishing is more difficult than fishing with a spinning or casting rod, fly casting can be taught in the course of a few hours and the enjoyment that comes from it is wonderful! Learn more about fly fishing now.
